Perkins Township Fire Department is currently creating a full-time Firefighter/EMT candidate list. All candidates must complete the FireTEAM exam through National Testing Network November 27, 2023 or later. Test will remain open, and lists may be adjusted based on future applicants.

Salary Information:
Class A Base Salary $61,045.40 – Paramedic Certification + Level 2 Firefighter Certification + Inspector Certification
Class B Base Salary $55,175.12 – Basic EMT + Level 2 Firefighter Certification + Inspector Certification
Class C1 Base Salary $49,911.16 – Basic EMT + Level 2 Firefighter Certification
Class C2 Base Salary $45,088.16 – No certifications
Salary based on Collective Bargaining Agreement 2022-2025 with raises on January 1, 2024 and January 1, 2025.

Perkins Township is organized and operates under the laws of the State of Ohio as well as local resolutions, laws, and policies intended to provide for effective, and responsive governance. Three elected Trustees form the Board of Township Trustees that adopts laws, policies, and determines spending priorities and financial commitments.
The Township’s organizational structure includes an Administrator that is responsible for the operations of all Township departments including Police, Fire, Public Works, Planning, Zoning, Building and Code Enforcement. Community engagement: Township staff work closely with residents and businesses in addressing their needs and in resolving any service issues that may arise from time-to-time. We are also in regular communication with other local, county and state elected officials and agencies thereby ensuring that our constituents have access to the resources that they may need. A close relationship also exists with the Perkins School District as we address common areas of interest whether it is recreational opportunities or school safety.
Community events include summer movie nights, an annual Founders Day celebration, Fire Station Open House, Trunk ‘n Treat, and the holiday season highlighted by the arrival of Santa.
Community Safety: The safety of the public and our staff is always at the forefront of what we do. Our Fire Department provides outreach training in CPR and first aid to the community as well as to businesses. In addition, the Township has mutual aid and other agreements that ensure that both Township’s needs in the time of an emergency as well as the needs of other communities in the county are met. Those Departments not only provide professional safety services to the community, but they also partner directly with the School District in providing ongoing training related to school safety. The Township will remain vigilant in providing the best safety services that we can, and our strategic focus on the same will not waiver.
City/County/Area Information: The Township is the gateway to Cedar Point, Lake Erie, and the Islands which are all major tourist destinations. The availability of excellent highway access and a significant supply of vacant, developable land have all contributed to this community’s position as the principal commercial core of Erie County as well as many abutting counties. Perkins Township is home to over 1,000 businesses including national chains and local entrepreneurs.

Hiring Process :
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Firefighter/EMTs shall have a working knowledge of modern technical aspects of the job including: fire prevention, inspection, and public education; fire behavior; fire suppression; rescue; emergency medical care; hazardous material operations; emergency vehicle driving; apparatus and equipment operation and maintenance; personal safety; incident command; and, report documentation. Firefighter/EMTs shall maintain a working knowledge of their response district in all matters relating to fire protection and life safety.
Firefighter/EMTs shall display the technical skills and abilities needed to perform their job, as well as: interpersonal skills needed to maintain a positive team-oriented environment and positive interaction with the public; willingness to perform assigned tasks; ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; and, verbal and written communications skills. Firefighter/EMTs shall maintain physical and mental fitness required to safely and effectively perform the job.
Responsibilities : Firefighter/EMTs are responsible to perform tasks and activities assigned to them through written policies and procedures, and verbal directions. These tasks enable the Department to achieve its goals and objectives and fulfill its purpose. These responsibilities include the following:
Prevention activities designed to prevent incidents from occurring or reduce loss when an incident does occur, such as: conducting fire inspections; conducting public information and public education programs; and assisting with investigations into the cause of incidents.
Preparation activities designed to prepare for the response to incidents in the most effective, most efficient, safest and most professional manner, such as: maintaining personal fitness and health; maintaining job related knowledge and skills; pre-planning response district, hazards, streets, water supplies and suppression systems; and maintaining apparatus and equipment in a state of readiness.
Response activities that ensure the handling of incidents in the most effective, most efficient, safest and most professional manner, such as: responding to dispatched alarms quickly, without delay; operating at incidents within departmental procedures, guidelines, and command system; rescue; patient care; fire suppression; incident mitigation; property and environment conservation; and public service and assistance.
Evaluation activities designed to evaluate and improve departmental operations and activities, as well as maintain and improve public opinion, such as: accurately completing any necessary records or reports; honestly participating in evaluations, reviews, critiques, and investigations of incidents or daily operations; properly offering input and suggestions regarding improvements in operations; maintaining apparatus, equipment, stations and grounds in a presentable, clean fashion; and maintaining a courteous, respectful, and helpful attitude towards those with whom they come in contact.
Firefighter/EMTs are also responsible for cooperating and communicating with Fire Department officers and each other to ensure the coordinated effort in achieving Departmental goals and objectives and fulfilling its purpose.
